There is a growing sense that education should be the path for human beings to grow in character and in their potential as change makers in the world they live in.

Educators should feel invigorated at the thought that they get to play a part in lending a younger person a hand to stand for goodness, righteousness and truth in a society that gradually loses sight of these virtues.

Having been created to make the world better, to honor our Creator, and to treat our fellow human beings with the dignity that they inherently possess, each child and adult is called forth to take a part in this magnificent play.

Education should be given reverently and humbly, recognizing that we are only instruments in the hands of God

Education should be tailored to each child but responding to universal principles

Education should be a joy for bilingual/bi-cultural children! Possessing such a wealth in terms of cultures and languages is a blast! Our education has included enjoying wonderful traditions with our Spanish-speaking family, singing and dancing to Hispanic music, learning about artists and composers from the Spanish-speaking world, and reading poetry and books originally written in Spanish has given us endless joy during our school days.

Hispanic heritage in the USA is a profound well from which our mixed race identity flows. If we don’t know it, then we have huge obstacles to love who we are.

My first step toward an education fit for my children was to realize that my children’s cultural identity was not similar to mine but rather a new one. Their wonderful mix of Anglo, Hispanic, and Indigenous heritage in the USA had to have an effect on what they would study. This is why I stopped using our wonderful Mason curriculum focused on US children with Anglo-European ancestry, and what inspired me to start a bi-cultural Mason education based on a US History from Anglo, Hispanic, and Indigenous perspectives.

Then, I started an independent research into US history. In our studies, we learn all the history of the current US territory, so we start with the Indigenous Peoples who inhabit the land. Then we learn of Europe and the context that made the encounter between Europe and America inevitable. We quickly introduce our neighbors: the Spanish-speaking countries that were part of the US territory, and the USA’s ties with the entire American continent. We approach the British Isles and the Iberian Peninsula thirdly, connecting history with Europe and the Mediterranean world. Interactions with Asia and Africa happen naturally along the way.
